Branded search: how to measure it, and why AI makes it matter more

Updated .

Branded search is every search that includes your brand name, its variations or your product names; branded traffic is the visits those searches bring. Everything else, the searches from people who do not know you yet, is non-branded. The split tells you two different things: non-branded traffic shows how well you are discovered, branded traffic shows how much demand for you already exists.

That second number has become more important with AI answers. When ChatGPT or Google AI Mode recommends a brand, many people do not click. They remember the name and search for it later. Branded search is where that influence becomes visible. This guide explains how to measure it in Search Console and GA4, and how to read it next to your AI visibility.

Branded vs non-branded keywords

A branded keyword contains your brand, a variation or misspelling of it, or the name of a product only you sell. A non-branded keyword describes a need without naming anyone.

Both matter, and they should be reported separately, as two of your SEO KPIs. Mixed together, a rise in branded traffic can hide a fall in discovery, or the opposite.

Why branded search matters more with AI answers

AI answers break the link between being recommended and being clicked. A user asks Perplexity for the best accountant for freelancers, reads three names, closes the tab and searches one of them on Google the next day. In GA4 that visit is organic or direct. Nothing connects it to the answer that created it.

Branded search is the closest thing to a footprint. When your brand appears more often in AI answers, branded searches tend to follow, with a delay of days or weeks. It is not proof on its own, because advertising, press and seasonality move branded search too. Read next to the answers themselves, it becomes one of the strongest signals you have. Our guide on tracking AI traffic in GA4 explains why GA4 alone misses this, and a how did you hear about us survey adds the customer's own account.

How to measure branded search in Search Console

Use the branded queries filter

Search Console has a branded queries filter in the Performance report, available to all eligible sites since March 2026. Google classifies queries as branded with an AI-assisted system that recognizes your brand name, its variations and misspellings, other languages and products specific to your brand. Apply the filter to see impressions, clicks, CTR and position for branded or non-branded queries only. The Insights report also has a card that splits clicks between the two.

Two limits. Google warns that some queries may be misclassified, so check the branded list once for obvious errors. And the filter needs enough query and impression volume: small sites may not see it.

Or build your own with a regex filter

If the filter is not available, or you want to control the definition, use a query filter with a custom regular expression. For Marlow & Finch it could look like this:

(?i)marlow|finch|marlowfinch

Include common misspellings and product names, and exclude words that create false matches. One caveat applies to every query filter: Search Console hides rare queries for privacy, so filtered totals will be lower than the overall totals. Compare branded and non-branded with each other, not with the unfiltered total.

How to measure branded traffic in GA4

GA4 does not receive search queries, so it cannot split organic traffic into branded and non-branded on its own. Three workarounds help.

Link Search Console to GA4 and use its query reports: they show branded queries and clicks inside GA4, though not joined with key events. Use the homepage and brand pages as a proxy: organic sessions landing on them are mostly branded. And keep paid brand campaigns separate in Google Ads, since they capture the same demand and can shift clicks away from organic results.

For reporting, the simplest combination is branded clicks from Search Console as the demand measure, and GA4 key events on the same landing pages as the business measure.

How to read branded search next to AI visibility

Look at 12 months, not 4 weeks, and compare each month with the same month a year earlier to remove seasonality. Mark campaigns, press coverage and launches on the timeline, since they explain many jumps.

Then add your AI visibility: how often ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Mode name your brand for the questions your customers ask, tracked on a schedule. When visibility rises and branded search follows a few weeks later, with no campaign to explain it, you have the clearest evidence available that AI answers are bringing you demand. Our pages on the AI visibility score and measuring GEO results show how to track the first half.

QuotedBy tracks the answers in your own Chrome, for free: it asks your questions on the five platforms on a schedule and records when your brand is named, in what position and next to which competitors. Put its trend next to your branded clicks.

Twelve weeks of AI visibility and branded clicks for one brand: visibility rises in week 5 after new reviews are cited, and branded clicks in Search Console start rising about two weeks later

Branded search beyond your own site

Branded searches are also a market measure. Comparing searches for your brand with searches for your competitors gives you your share of search, a metric that research has linked to future market share. It sits naturally next to your share of voice in AI answers: one measures demand, the other visibility.

Frequently asked questions

What are branded keywords?

Search terms that include your brand name, its variations or misspellings, or the names of products only you sell.

What is the difference between branded and non-branded traffic?

Branded traffic comes from people who searched for your brand; non-branded traffic comes from people who searched for a need without naming you. The first measures existing demand, the second measures discovery.

How do I see branded queries in Search Console?

Use the branded queries filter in the Performance report, if your site is eligible. Otherwise, filter queries with a custom regular expression that matches your brand and its variations.

Why is my branded traffic increasing?

Usually because more people know your brand: advertising, press, word of mouth or recommendations in AI answers. Check what changed in each of these before crediting one.

Is branded traffic organic?

Yes, when it comes from unpaid search results. Paid brand campaigns are separate and should be reported apart.
