Three metrics that make up AI visibility
The first is the visibility rate: the share of answers that name your brand. If you track 20 questions on five platforms, you collect 100 answers; if your brand appears in 34 of them, your visibility rate is 34%. It is the closest thing to a single AI visibility score, and the easiest to explain.
The second is the first-mention rate: the share of answers where your brand is the first one named. Being listed fifth and being recommended first are very different results, and this number separates them. In the same example, a brand named first in 12 answers has a first-mention rate of 12%.
The third is share of voice: your mentions divided by all the mentions of the brands you track. It answers the question clients ask most often, "how do we compare with the competition?". If the four brands in a project collect 152 mentions in total and yours has 34, your AI share of voice is 22%. Together, the three are the core metrics of GEO. For the formula in every channel, read how to measure share of voice; its demand-side counterpart is share of search.

How to calculate AI share of voice
Share of voice comes from advertising, where it measures your share of all the ads in a market. In AI search it works the same way, with mentions instead of ads. Count how many answers name each brand you track, add them up, and divide each brand's count by the total.
Two details make the number honest. Use the same questions, platforms and period for every brand, or the comparison means nothing. And decide which competitors to include before you look at the results: adding or removing a brand changes everyone's share. That is why QuotedBy works on a fixed set of competitors per project and flags other businesses the AI keeps naming, so you can choose to add them deliberately. To find out who those competitors are and why AI names them, see our guide to AI competitor analysis.
What is a good AI visibility score?
It depends on the category, which is why a single benchmark would mislead you. In a niche with three serious players, a visibility rate of 60% can be normal; in a crowded market like accounting software, 20% can be excellent. The useful comparison is with your direct competitors on the same questions, and with your own numbers over time.
Read the metrics together and by platform. A brand with high visibility but a low first-mention rate is known but not preferred. A brand strong on Perplexity and weak on ChatGPT probably depends on recent web content more than on long-term reputation, as explained on our Claude page. And look at the trend across several runs rather than a single snapshot, because AI answers vary from one day to the next.
How QuotedBy measures your AI visibility
QuotedBy runs your questions on ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Google AI Mode and Perplexity from your own Chrome, saves every answer and reads it for you. The overview then shows your visibility rate, how often you are named first and your share of mentions, which is your AI share of voice, next to each competitor and platform by platform, together with the priorities: questions where you are missing and businesses the AI keeps naming.

Each run becomes a point in the trend, so you can see whether visibility is growing and on which platforms. The numbers are backed by the answers themselves, with text, links and screenshots, so every percentage can be traced to what the AI actually said. The sources behind those answers are in AI citation tracking.
When it is time to share the results, the overview becomes a PDF report your client can read in five minutes. With Pro, you can also log the work you did and measure its effect on visibility and first mentions.
Free AI visibility tracking, and what Pro adds
The Free plan measures visibility for one project with three competitors and 20 active questions on all five platforms, with 90 days of visible history.
Pro, at 24 € a month, raises the limits to 10 projects, 15 competitors and 80 active questions, keeps the full history and adds built-in AI analysis, alerts, before and after measurement and PDF reports with your own logo.
Frequently asked questions
What is an AI visibility score?
A number that summarises how often AI platforms mention your brand. There is no standard one; the clearest version is the visibility rate, the share of tracked answers that name your brand.
What is a good visibility score on AI platforms?
There is no universal threshold. Compare your score with your direct competitors on the same questions and watch the trend over time.
How do I measure AI share of voice?
Count the answers that name each tracked brand, add them up, and divide each brand's count by the total. Keep questions, platforms and competitors fixed so the comparison stays fair.
How can I check the AI visibility score of my business?
Write 10 to 20 questions your customers ask, run them on the main AI platforms and count how often your business is named. QuotedBy does it for free for one project.
