Gemini and AI Mode are not the same thing
Google now answers with AI in two places, and they are easy to confuse. Google AI Mode is part of Google Search: people reach it from a search, it searches the web for every question and shows its sources next to the answer. The Gemini app is Google's assistant, the one people open on purpose at gemini.google.com, on Android or inside Google's work apps. It answers many questions from what the model already knows and searches Google only when it needs to.
The result is that the same question can produce different brands in the two products. A store that AI Mode recommends because it ranks well today may be missing from Gemini, which relies more on what it learned about the category over time, and the other way round. How to track brand mentions in Gemini
The method is the same as for any AI platform. Choose the questions your customers ask, ask them in Gemini on a regular schedule with the same wording, and record each answer: whether your brand is named, its position, the competitors named before it and, when there are any, the sources. A single answer means little, because Gemini, like every AI, can change its list from one day to the next; the trend across several runs is what counts.
Gemini also adapts to the person asking. A signed-in account with a long history and personalization switched on can see different answers from a clean one. Track from an account dedicated to monitoring, or with personalization off, and keep the same account between runs.
